  • Description

Maria Uzor?s ?Innocence and Worldliness? EP is a micro-world of hyper digital electro-soul, wrapped in metallically sensual vocals, and beamed in from outer space. Intersecting the spirit of 80s and 90s club culture, the edge of avant electronica, the groove of African-Caribbean syncopation, and the aesthetics of science fiction, Uzor?s bold production pushes the boundaries of genre, creating a fresh sound that navigates a journey of the soul with one foot on the ground and the other in the cosmos. The singer and producer from acclaimed dance-punk duo Sink Ya Teeth channels elements of Flying Lotus, EBM, and Drum n bass on her first official solo outing; and boy does it feel like emerging, blinking, from a cave into the sun. Uzor wrote and recorded the EP in her living room last Winter, fuelled on a diet of Octavia E. Butler, Sun Ra, early techno, and dub reggae. Lyrically, Innocence and Worldliness centres around change and a return to the core of ones being. From the playful call for ones own space in Donuts, to the intergalactic choir providing back-up as Uzor sings, ?..now is the discontent / now is the moment of ascent? in Now is the Core, the songs speak of selfrealisation and transformation. ?Lockdown afforded me the space to step back,? she says of writing the ep, ?And with that came an awareness of the ways in which some relationships had damaged me on a psychological level. My culture is important to me and I realised I hadn?t always been around people who realised that. I felt like I?d lost myself and I needed to return. This EP is about that journey, from dark to light. A gradual return to joy.? Uzor?s music may sit outside genres, but it?s completely fresh, accessible and distinctly her own voice.
