Description
One of the most important and influential black men of the past sixty or so years, Harry Belafonte is still involved on the world stage as a political activist and UNICEF's Goodwill Ambassador.
But back in the mid-50s he was, for a couple of years, just about the most popular and successful singer in the world, widely known as 'The King Of Calypso'.
Indeed, his LP Calypso topped the US charts for 31 weeks in 1956, and was the very first album to sell a million copies.
This unique compilation features all of Belafonte's US and UK hit singles between 1953-62, plus some of the most popular sides from several of his biggest-selling LPs during this same period.
Includes the hits 'Gomen Nasai', 'Jamaica Farewell', 'Mary's Boy Child', 'Banana Boat Song', 'Mama Looka Boo-Boo', 'Cocoanut Woman', 'Island In The Sun', 'Scarlet Ribbons', 'The Waiting Game', 'Ain't That Love', 'Little Bernadette', 'Son Of Mary' and 'Hole In The Bucket' (a duet with Odetta)
Also includes important LP tracks like 'Unchained Melody', 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter', 'Eden Was Just Like This', 'Another Man Done Gone', 'Midnight Special', etc.
This is the first compilation to include all of Belafonte's chart records, and features sides which have never previously appeared on CD.
