The Creole jazz master Edward "Kid" Ory (1886-1973) was 'king of the tailgate trombone', whose distinctive technique became a central element of traditional New Orleans jazz. Along with Jack Teagarden, he is the most famous and influential trombonist in jazz history. Retrospective's Creole Trombone presents a thrilling survey of his extraordinary career, including such classic late 20s sessions as those with Louis Armstrong's Hot Five (Muskrat Ramble), King Oliver's Dixie Syncopators (Snag It!), The New Orleans Wanderers/Bootblacks (Perdido Street Blues) and Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers (Smokehouse Blues). Ory returned to jazz in 1944 to become a seminal figure in the revival of New Orleans jazz, successfully leading his own Creole Jazz Band for some 22 years. No fewer than 27 definitive tracks from this rich period (1944-1958) are included, featuring the successive trumpet leads of Mutt Carey (Blues For Jimmie), Teddy Buckner (Savoy Blues), Alvin Alcorn (Royal Garden Blues) and Henry "Red" Allen (Christopher Columbus). This is traditional jazz at its finest. And, as a bonus track, there's Kid Ory's pioneering 1922 recording of Ory's Creole Trombone.
