Description
Following the release of debut single ‘Land of Souls’ and follow up single ‘These Hands’, the band have quickly gained widespread praise in the UK press. Hhymn are more than ready to drop ‘In the Depths’ – a record with enough gravity to pull at all but the heaviest of hearts. To date the band have received glowing reviews in The Fly, Drowned in Sound and Subba-Cultcha whilst 6music’s Tom Robinson quickly spotted Hhymn’s unique and passion filled sound, jumping on board from their first release and interviewing the band no less than three times.
The furore building around this Nottingham based band led Mat Horne, star of Gavin & Stacey, and 6music DJ, to cite Hhymn as his favourite new act, and select them to play live at his exclusive London club night ‘Session’ which has played host to an impressive series of acts such as The Libertines, Florence and the Machine, and The Macabees.
The new single ‘Girl of mine’ is a song that picks you up and envelopes your being, taking you through a highly decorated landscape. Bannard’s acrobatic vocals- sometimes a gentle croon, sometimes soaring in dizzy arcs - chronicles this tale gliding across a scene deftly coloured by turns of Helliwell’s elegiac mariachi trumpet and twinkling glockenspiel, and the gentle psychedelia of Ritchie’s guitars; elements echoed across this diverse record, from the icy English folk of ‘Not Before I Go’, through to the technicolour sunset that is ‘Behind the Sun’ to the dreamy midnight ambience of ‘Wolves’.
‘In The Depths’ is an album filled with songs that roam, resolve and enlighten, communicating with wisdom that can only be discovered through enduring some of life’s more meaningful callings and it does so with passion and conviction.
“Think Guy Garvey fronting The Delgados or a slightly stripped down Decemberists and you’re in the right ballpark.”
Drowned In Sound
“Slow-burning but infectious songs that bring everyone from Bon Iver and Beirut to mind.” The Fly
