Julius Weismann made a significant contribution to the music of the twentieth century. His catalogue of over 150 works include eleven String Quartets, two of which Georg Mais, the conductor of this new recording has arranged for chamber orchestra. Weismann's style is difficult to classify; it exhibits influences from German romanticism, especially the music of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, as well as impressionistic echoes.
