Description
Samuel Scheidt was born in Halle, Germany, and spent his entire life there apart from a two-year apprenticeship under Sweelinck in Amsterdam. He became court organist in 1609 and court music director ten years later. Halle was hard hit by the Thirty Years' War, and the arts fell on difficult times. Like his friend Sch??tz, Scheidt had to reduce his compositions to the barest essentials for reasons of war. Scheidt wrote four books of 'Geistliche Concerte' (Sacred Concertos) for two to three voices with thoroughbass, though he had originally designed them for much larger performance dimensions. Scheidt expert Roland Wilson won much acclaim for his interpretation of Scheidt's instrumental 'Ludi musici' with the same artists: \A sonically spectacular recording...bewitching and irresistible (International Record Review). These rare concertos have been sourced partly from extensive reconstructions, and partly from original manuscript sources and are now available in a world premi?¿re recording presenting their full musical splendour.
