Description
What could make soul legend Dan Penn drive 2,000 miles, all the way across the Southwest of the USA? The answer, as ever, is in the music and more specifically in this record and a band known as the Hacienda Brothers. Chris Gaffney and Dave Gonzalez formed the band after an impromptu collaboration at a party. Gonzalez' name is familiar to anyone who has been involved with roots music, as the leader of rockabilly/blues power trio The Paladins. This band spends more than 200 days a year on the road (in Europe as well as the US) and has recorded from labels ranging from Rounder and Rhino to 4AD. Gaffney's natural singing ability has been utilised by numerous country stars (Webb Pierce & Hank Snow to name two) and his band the Cold Hard Facts has been on the road for more than 25 years. Bring these two talents together in a studio with some inspired songwriting and Dan Penn production magic and you have this record - a plaintive, haunting sound derived from Soul and Country music, spiced up with bluesy rhythms and tasteful guitar licks. It's a gem of a record from a hardworking band who are in the business purely for the love of music.
