Description
The New Riders were initially formed as a vehicle for the Grateful Dead to indulge their tastes for country music, and attracted a considerable audience through their association, quickly developing an identity of their own. Their intelligent blend of blues, country, jam and psychedelic rock can be traced back to the early 1960s Peninsula folk/beatnik scene centred on Stanford University's now-defunct Perry Lane housing complex in Menlo Park, California. Future Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia often played gigs with like-minded guitarist David Nelson. The young John 'Marmaduke' Dawson also played some concerts with Garcia, Nelson, and their compatriots while visiting relatives on summer vacation. Inspired by American folk music, rock and roll, and blues, Garcia formed the Grateful Dead with blues singer Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, while Nelson joined the similarly inclined New Delhi River Band shortly thereafter.
The New Riders of the Purple Sage continued touring and releasing albums throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s to an increasingly fallow reception; none of the albums that followed New Riders (1976) charted on the Billboard 200. The band continued to open several Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band shows in 1977 and 1978, including the final concert preceding the closure of Winterland Ballroom on December 31, 1978.
Performed live at My Father's Place, Roslyn NY 23rd February 1981, for broadcast on 92.7 WLIR-FM, featuring No Other Love, The Way She Dances, Full Moon at Midnight, Day Dreamin' Girl and Pakalolo Man from their 10th studio album Feelin' All Right released later the same year.
The years of grinding it out on the road and the lack of major label attention led to Nelson taking a break in 1982. Dawson continued to carry the New Riders torch all through the 1980s and early 1990s with help from Rusty Gauthier, Gary Vogensen, Bill Laymon, and select other Bay Area musicians.
