  • Description

In 1960 jazz impresario Norman Granz took the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Miles Davis Quintet and the Stan Getz Quartet on a "Jazz At The Philharmonic" tour through Europe. The only Swiss concert of the tour took place on Friday April 8th 1960 in the Kongresshaus Zurich and was recorded by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. Released officially for the first time and mastered from the original tapes, this new CD presents the complete set performed by the Stan Getz Quartet that evening.

Although long established as one of the United States' foremost tenor saxophonists, Stan Getz was actually based in Denmark at the time of this recording. According to newspaper ads he intended to perform on the tour with a Copenhagen based rhythm section but after the first concert in Paris he parted company with the bassist and drummer. Retaining pianist Jan Johansson, Getz recruited bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen from Oscar Peterson's trio for the remaining concerts.

As for the programme at the Zurich concert, this included jazz originals written by Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson and Harold Land together with the standards "Gone With The Wind" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most". Needless to say Getz' playing is impeccable throughout a set which sparkles with invention.

Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone), Jan Johansson (piano), Ray Brown (bass), Ed Thigpen (drums)
