Description
Reissue of 'Shades of Blues', a session recorded in 1994 in which legendary trumpeter Clark Terry again demonstrates that he is able to play the blues like no other jazz player. Here we see Clark team up with his old friend, pianist Charles Fox and trombonist Al Grey.
Charles Fox and Clark Terry grew up together in St. Louis and have been playing music together practically all their lives. Fox can also be heard on recordings with Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis and Jimmy Forest. It seemed logical and natural that Clark's regular bass player Marcus McLaurine would be on the session too. Marcus has been working with Clark Terry ever since he arrived in New York, some 13 years ago and has performed with with Cleo Laine and Lou Donaldson. Also on board is trombonist Al Grey, who in his own words, "had nothing better to do than to play some blues with his old friend".
"All the themes are original blues, simple and unpretentious but played with maximum variation." - Penguin Guide to Jazz
Personnel: Clark Terry (trumpet, flugelhorn), Al Grey (trombone), Marcus McLaurine (bass), Charles Fox (piano)
