    With the Mecklenburg-Schwerin Court Orchestra, Ludwigslust, also known as the "Versailles of Mecklenburg", was home to one of Germany's most distinguished orchestras from 1767 onward. The residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin attracted numerous outstanding musicians from across Europe, among them the double bassist Johannes Matthias Sperger and the cellist and viola da gamba virtuoso Franz Xaver Hammer. Hammer's precious viola da gamba, built in 1778, can now be heard once again in all its sonic beauty more than 200 years after his death. Following an extensive restoration, the historic instrument has been brought back to life in the hands of Echo Klassik award winner Thomas Fritzsch. With its warm and richly nuanced sound, the "Ducal Viol" opens a fascinating window into Mecklenburg's musical history and recalls the era of European court music in the late eighteenth century.
