Echoing the spirit of such legendary pairings as Al Cohn & Zoot Sims or Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, Hamilton and Allen are constantly inventive and artfully inspire each other to new heights. 'Round Midnight' is their third recording together and sees these two melodic tenormen create what has to be one of the finest and most mightily swinging recordings in either gentleman's impressive discography.
Harry Allen and Scott Hamilton first recorded together on the obscure 'Just You Just Me' (only released in Japan on BMG) and in 2004 they reconvened for 'Heavy Juice' on Concord. For their latest outing, the leaders are joined by Harry's regular rhythm section and the music clearly benefits from the rapport established by a closely knit, working band. As for the repertoire, it's an eclectic mix which includes Rodgers & Harts "Lover", Neil Hefti's "Flight of the Foo Birds" (from Count Basie's book), Bill Potts' stop time shouter "The Opener" and, of course, the title track originally from the pen of Thelonious Monk.
