Friends and fans alike have anxiously awaited the release of Henson's fourth album - almost four years to be exact. It's in those four years, however, that Henson has fully cemented his place as a Texas honky tonk and dance hall staple. From playing a widely popular Tuesday night residency coined "Two Steppin' Tuesdays" at the historic Broken Spoke in Austin, to his monthly appearances at Luckenbach and much more, those who have been following Henson have certainly come to know a more confident, individualistic, grounded and smooth entertainer both on and off the stage. Old and new fans alike will not be disappointed.
The album in it's entirety completes the original country music trifecta giving you the option to dance (Honky Tonk Feels Right), reflect (Just Believe), or wallow in heart break (Not a Home). Though it is a studio album, recorded by Tommy Detamore at Cherry Ridge Studios (as was Henson's last record, One Heart's Gone,), Honky Tonk Frontier is as close to a live recording as it can be without being one. Forget the bells and whistles, they weren't used and, more importantly, weren't needed. Like his live shows, it's reminiscent of the customs and traditions of trails once forged, yet begins to clear a new path - one that we can only hope more "country" artists will follow or at the very least, travel for inspiration as they make their own way.
On Honky Tonk Frontier, you'll find more of the Henson formula, a spirited attitude with captivating guitar licks and a "ton of steel", a phrase Henson uses when referring to the amount of pedal steel guitar he includes in his music. "It's the defining instrument in country music as far as I'm concerned" he declares.
Weldon Henson's music continues to remove any shame associated with labeling oneself a country music fan in today's modern world – so pick up a copy of "Honky Tonk Frontier" - listen loud and listen proud!
