Description
Billy Griffin born (1950) and raised in West Baltimore, Maryland was a guitarist, as well as a singer and sang with his brother Donald in a local Baltimore group called The Last Dynasty. With the group Griffin won a talent program on NBC Television. First prize was a record deal with RCA, but he never took it. The next week, Griffin was in Detroit, auditioning for Berry Gordy and the Motown executives. The audition was to replace Smokey Robinson of the Miracles, and Griffin got the job. The Miracles left Motown in 1976, signing with Columbia Records. After two albums for Columbia, Griffin and Moore decided to retire from performing and focus on songwriting. In 1982, Griffin released his first solo album, "Be With Me", with the hit single "Hold Me Tighter in the Rain" which was a smash in Europe and one of the best dance singles that year. He followed in 1983 with the album "Respect", which contained his first solo U.S. hit, "Serious". Through both albums, Griffin's work with producer John Barnes - who later worked with Michael Jackson - provided a bridge from the then-dying disco era to the 80’s dance sound that Jackson popularized in Thriller and Bad. Griffin then teamed with Leon Ware to record the "Systematic" in 1985. The title song Systematic (written by James Ingram and Leon ware) is one of the best but lesser known r&b tracks of the 80's with one of the tightest bass lines ever. It is hard to find other tracks produced by Leon Ware that were as good as this. After Systematic Billy Griffin moved to Atlantic to record the single "Believe It Or Not," but never released an album there. -
