Description
Second and final part of the previously unreleased 1960 Lausanne concert by the Max Roach Quintet. Like part one, the piano-less quintet features the powerhouse group of Tommy and Stanley Turrentine, Julian Priester and Bobby Boswell in extended performances of jazz standards and originals. Highlights include a Kenny Dorham's "La Villa", Thelonious Monk's "Bemsha Swing", and Max Roach's own composition, "Drum Conversation".
After overcoming the creative crisis brought about by the death of his trumpeter and co-leader Clifford Brown in 1956, and having disbanded his new quintet with Booker Little and George Coleman, Max Roach (1924-2007) kept his faith in the strength of hard bop, and reformed his piano-less group Max Roach Plus Four in 1959. This time he put his trust in a band of young jazzmen that included the Turrentine brothers - Stanley and Tommy, on tenor sax and trumpet respectively - trombonist Julian Priester and bassist Bob Boswell. It's that group that is featured on this live recording from one of the dates on their only tour of Europe. In a review of 'Part One' in this series, Roach was described as being in "awe-inspiring form" by the Financial Times.
Personnel: Max Roach (drums), Tommy Turrentine (trumpet), Julian Priester (trombone), Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone), Bobby Boswell (bass)
