Description
Recorded live in Lausanne in February of 1960 and officially released for the first time, Max Roach leads his piano-less group of young lions through a set of extended performances of jazz standards that include Kenny Dorham's "Lotus Blossom" and Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia". Filling the tenor saxophone chair is Stanley Turrentine who later became a star in his own right with highly successful releases on Blue Note and CTI Records.
After overcoming the creative crisis brought about by the death of his trumpeter and co-leader Clifford Brown in 1956, and having disbanded his new quintet with Booker Little and George Coleman, Max Roach (1924-2007) kept his faith in the strength of hard bop, and reformed his piano-less group Max Roach Plus Four in 1959. This time he put his trust in a band of young jazzmen that included the Turrentine brothers - Stanley and Tommy, on tenor sax and trumpet respectively - trombonist Julian Priester, and bassist Bob Boswell. It's that group that is featured on this live recording from one of the dates on their only tour of Europe.
Personnel: Max Roach (drums), Tommy Turrentine (trumpet), Julian Priester (trombone), Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone), Bobby Boswell (bass)
