Description
Bafana Nhlapo is one of the emerging talents on the African music scene. He presents a modern expression of music that is funky, vibrant and above all spiritual. His music is limitless and free of boundaries, luring the attention of listeners from across the globe. Bridging the traditional wailing sounds of Southern Africa with contemporary music styles such as afro, funk, jazz and rock, combined with an energetic edge and presence on stage, Bafana will leave the listeners jaw-dropping and amazed.
Staying true to his roots, Bafana sings mostly in his mother tongue is Zulu. Although a difficult language for many to understand, the emotions and message in his songs are beautifully communicated through his powerful falsetto voice. He wishes his music to reflect his drive for innovation and creativity in all aspects of life.
Bafana Nhlapo plays his own version of industrial and light percussion comprised of various instruments and household items. The most unique is his use of old tin cups. The sound and beat created when his fingers drum the cups is unlike anything you've heard. As well as due to its beautiful and funky sound, the intention behind using them is to inspire people by showing that much can be made out of humble resources.
His most successful endeavor to date is with South African band Kwani Experience, for which he received several national award nominations including Best Newcomer and Best Group. After extensive touring with Kwani in Europe and Africa, he is now embarking on his solo career.
Bafana is releasing his first solo project as an artist. The album is produced by the eminent jazz artist Bugge Wesseltoft from Norway, and is released on Jazzland Records. Bafana is fusing traditional South African rythms with contemporary and jazzy brass sounds.
His reputation for extraordinary vocal and musical skills has earned him opportunities to share both stage and studio with well renowned artists such as the late Busi Mhlongo, Baaba Maal, Salif Keita, Madala Kunene, Mutabaruka, Pops Mohamed.
