  • Description

The seven-track project seamlessly blends diverse cultural and musical influences, exploring profound themes of Black identity, motherhood, birth, and the natural world. Describing the album as "a sonic emergence of the person I was becoming," anaiis reflects on her personal growth throughout its creation. Collaborating with Brazilian artists Sessa and Luedji Luna, anaiis expands the album's cross-cultural depth, merging Brazilian musical traditions with her own artistic vision to create a rich, multi-layered sound. These collaborations infuse the record with a unique blend of genres, from rock to bossa nova.

The album's creation was an immersive, transformative experience for anaiis, characterized by a human and spontaneous approach. "We spent days on the beach, sharing meals and stories, creating together. Every track was recorded live to tape--no computers. By the end of the week, we had an album that captured the essence of that moment".

Grupo Cosmo, the Brazilian trio accompanying anaiis, brings together drums and percussion, bass, and Sessa on acoustic guitar. Their sound combines the raw energy of a power trio with the lush, layered traditions of Brazilian music, including rock, pop, and psychedelia influences from the '70s. This blend of electric and acoustic elements produces a sound both full and intimate, resonating with the warmth of folk and bossa nova.Though Grupo Cosmo has yet to perform live together, their intense studio sessions sparked a creative synergy that is reflected in the album's organic flow. Their music connects deeply with nature, balancing environmental themes with moments of beauty and contemplation, celebrating simplicity and sensitivity amidst global complexities.

The origins of this collaboration trace back to a 2020 artist residency in Salvador, Brazil, where anaiis first met Grammy-nominated Luedji Luna. The two bonded over their shared cultural experiences as Black women, writing the track Toda Cor. It wasn't until anaiis discovered Sessa's music in 2022, however, that the album's Brazilian influence fully crystallized. In April 2023, she returned to Brazil to continue working with these artists, solidifying the album's collaborative nature.
