  • Description

Presented here is Charles Mingus' complete original classic album 'Tijuana Moods' (RCA Victor LPM-2533), featuring an all-star group including Jimmy Knepper, Clarence Shaw and Curtis Porter. "A Colloquial Dream", from the same sessions but not included on the original LP, has been added as a bonus, along with four Mingus compositions from a date recorded the following month with almost the same personnel. The latter session includes a different version of "A Colloquial Dream", which was retitled "Scenes in the City".

The Poll Winners label is devoted to the CD reissue of albums that received the maximum 5-star rating in a DownBeat album review. This only rarely happened, and most of the DownBeat albums have become true classics revered by all music lovers. These new editions present the complete original 5-star albums, which are expanded to include interesting bonus albums or tracks by the artist at the peak of their talents.

    Description

Limited edition, 180g green coloured vinyl pressing of the complete album + 2 bonus tracks. Contains new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide to Jazz's writer Brian Morton and by Paris' prestigious Jazz Magazine.

Inspired by a trip to the Mexican city of Tijuana, 'Tijuana Moods' was recorded in 1957 but held on the shelves by RCA until its release in 1962. Bassist/composer Charles Mingus at the time said that this was his greatest recording, and it certainly ranks near the top. Mingus himself proclaimed on the back cover that that was "the best record I ever made", having already recorded important albums such as 'Mingus Ah Um' and 'Mingus Dynasty' among others. The level of performance and composition on Tijuana are clearly exceptional.
