Description
This album, recorded by the distinguished artists Michal Bryla and Robert Morawski, alternates works for viola and piano by Dmitri Shostakovich (the cycle of miniatures, Op. 97, from the music for the film Ovod, transcribed by Vadim Borisovsky, and the Sonata in C major, Op. 147) and works by Pawel Lukaszewski: the Aria and the Sonata for viola and pianoforte. The performers decided to showcase the viola's merits through the lens of composers for whom it is not their pri-mary focus. The unusual combination of works by Shostakovich and Lukaszewski allows for the instrument's dis-tinctive sound to be presented in various guises. Its timbre perfectly captures the artistry of a diverse repertoire--both originally composed and rearranged, in both miniatures and larger cyclical works. There is room here for both delicate swings and virtuoso passages, and the warm sound of the viola gives the album a special character, open to various interpretations.
