  • Description

This CD contains five new reconstructions of lost works by Bach, known only through later arrangements by the master himself.

They were all made by Pieter Dirksen, Combattimento's harpsichordist and renowned Bach researcher.

Central here are the two Concertos for three harpsichords and strings BWV 1063 and 1064, which are in fact very difficult to realise convincingly in their surviving form. These monumental compositions appear here in a considerably reduced scorings - BWV 1063r for two violins, strings and continuo, BWV 1064r for three violins, two violas and continuo - which brings out the beauty of Bach's music in a convincing way.

The collection also includes the well-known Violin Concerto in G minor BWV 1056r (albeit with a completely "new" middle movement reconstructed on the basis of a 7-bar fragment), the Partita for lute or harpsichord BWV 997 in its alleged original form for violin and lute, and a reconstruction of Bach's "little" Harpsichord Concerto in D minor BWV 1059r.

The accompanying booklet provides detailed background information on the reconstruction process
