Description
The songs in this compilation in the rare instrumentation of tenor, clarinet and piano were written over a period of 20 years, between 1828 and 1848. In their tonal language and in their basic poetic attitude, the songs by Schubert, Meyerbeer, Spohr, Kreutzer and Lachner are characteristic of the early Romantic self-image. The poets and composers saw the natural phenomena they enthusiastically described as a reflection of their own souls; moreover, nature is also the idealised refuge for the artist misunderstood by his fellow men and the unhappy lover. The tenor Werner G ra is one of the best-known Lied singers of our time and can look back on an extensive discography. The present recording is his debut on Pan Classics.
