Buddy Emmons, the world's most influential and innovative pedal steel guitar player is celebrated with an album of 16 new tracks entitled The Big E: A Salute to Steel Guitarist Buddy Emmons.
Various artists - including four Country Music Hall of Fame members and many of today's top steel players - salute Buddy Emmons with songs written or recorded by the pedal steel legend throughout his groundbreaking career. The album weaves an historical thread from Emmons's breakthrough with Little Jimmy Dickens in 1955 at age 18 through pivotal stages he pioneered in the pedal steel's development.
The project, funded by Kickstarter and the production school Music Producers Institute, presents sixteen newly recorded collaborations.
Willie Nelson sings "Are You Sure," written with Emmons in 1962, while John Anderson presents "Half A Mind," recorded by Ernest Tubb with Emmons in 1958. Raul Malo reworks Ray Price's "Night Life," Emmons's stellar 1963 steel showcase.
A 16-page booklet details the transformative musical and mechanical innovations Emmons brought to the instruments tuning and design. Extensive liner notes, unseen photos and track-by-track insights trace Emmons's revolutionary recording and touring career.
The Big E is produced by Grammy-winner Steve Fishell, who has produced or recorded with Emmylou Harris, The Mavericks, Eric Church, The Pistol Annies, and Commander Cody among others. Fishell is now on tour with Harris and Rodney Crowell in support of their duet release Old Yellow Moon.
