Description
This is the 4th 'supplement' to our triple album 'A Potted History Of British Traditional Jazz' (LACD300) and it deals with the so-called "territory bands". The Trad phenomenon caused Jazz bands to be formed the length and breadth of the country and this release looks at some of those bands. Bands like Bristol's Avon Cities Jazz Band achieved some national fame and secured a recording contract with a major label where as others like Carlisle's Gateway Jazz Band had a purely local following.
Some of the musicians went on to greater things: John Barnes of the Zenith 6 went on to become one of the UK's leading Jazz musicians whereas the trumpet player with Bill Croft's band from Newcastle Upon Tyne was John Walters who went on to be a BBC producer and work with John Peel. Some bands only lasted a short time and others carried on well into the 1980s and beyond.
As before a comprehensive booklet tells the stories behind the bands. Many tracks are very rare and some have never been issued before.
