Description
Following the success of our triple album BRITISH TRADITIONAL JAZZ: A POTTED HISTORY 1936-63 (LACD300) we have released a number of CDs related to it. These additional volumes have looked at specific aspects of the Jazz scene and this one looks at bands who secured major record deals, but never quite managed the big breakthrough.
Mike Cotton's band - dubbed the youngest professional Trad band - although very talented and very good came along a little too late, just as Trad was falling out of favour. Similarly with Alan Elsdon who had served his time as a sidesman with Cy Laurie and Terry Lightfoot. Mike Cotton would move into Rock music, but Elsdon kept a band going into the 2000s. The Avon Cities band was essentially a semi-pro provincial band, but which secured a national following. Coming from the South coast Gerry Brown's band was the same. Forrie Cairns' and Jim McHarg's bands grew out of a split in Scotland's major band, The Clyde Valley Stompers. Beryl Bryden was a featured singer in a number of bands, but made very few records under her own name.
