Description
Fela Kuti's drummer and musical director Tony Allen completely rewrote the book on what was possible within the Afrobeat genre with his groundbreaking 1999 album, 'Black Voices'. This re-issue contains the original tracks, mixed by Doctor L, from that release together with the previously unreleased session recordings. The album features Michael 'Clip' Payne and Gary 'Mudbone' Cooper (Parliament - Funkadelic).
Sixty years old at the time, Allen took the classic AfroBeat sound and fused it with dub and "DJ" sounds. After the recording sessions were complete, the tracks were mixed without Allen's input by the DJ, producer, multi-instrumentalist Doctor L. Doctor L took the mesmerizing rhythms and musical progressions that Allen created and he spun them into a stunningly modern sound, filled them with bright organ lines, as well as adding the occasional clavinet and more formal "dub DJ" effects.
This re-issue includes for the first time the original unaltered session recordings for which Tony Allen enlisted a group of talented musicians including Michael 'Clip' Payne and Gary 'Mudbone' Cooper, both members of the Parliament- Funkadelic collective. Listening to these tracks one is left in awe at the sheer energy and spirit of Allen, who is still making remarkable recordings under his own name and as a member of Damon Albarn's The Good, The Bad and the Queen.
