Description
The collection Sacri Concentus by Lodovico Grossi da Viadana (1560-1627), published in 1614, is a truly monumental contribution to the repertoire of the motet with basso continuo. It is therefore surprising that this collection has received so little attention to date.
The Viadana Collective presents the forgotten motets and reveals their beauty through tonally diverse and richly ornamented interpretations, which benefit in particular from the magnificent acoustics of the Basilica Palatina di Santa Barbara and the excellent 16th century Antegnati organ.
'All four singers show a perfect command of the declamatory way of singing that is needed in this repertoire. […] The ensemble of voices and instruments is immaculate. The instrumentalists are true virtuosos on their respective instruments.' – Music Web International
'This is not only a welcome addition to our understanding of this hinge moment in western music, but also essential listening and a delight throughout. I thoroughly recommend it.' –
