Description
Sheffield's The Suncharms formed in 1989; following initial rehearsals the band soon found themselves supporting indiepop legends such as The Orchids and The Television Personalities, as well as emerging shoegaze bands such as Cranes, Catherine Wheel and Curve. Two EPs were released in 1991 on the Wilde Club label, garnering respectable indie chart positions and landing the band a session for the legendary John Peel. The Suncharms were less ethereal or abstract than a lot of shoegaze -- accurate reference points might include early Ride or The Boo Radleys. Sadly the familiar scenario of band members lives going in different directions began to hamper progress -- in April 1993 The Suncharms played the last gig of their initial phase. Over the intervening years The Suncharms name was kept alive by a small group of indie enthusiasts, websites, online radio stations and bloggers, leading to the 2016 release of a CD compilation of the two EPs plus assorted demos and previously unreleased songs. As a result of all this renewed activity the band received increased exposure through BBC Radio 6 Music and decided to get back into a rehearsal space leading to their first gigs in over 20 years and the new songs on this single. The still have all the psychedelic fuzz and melodic mystery of their now-classic 90s recordings, and hopefully represent only the first of many Suncharms records to come.
