Description
The Golden Age of Steam release their debut album, Raspberry Tongue, on Babel featuring the compositions of multi-reed virtuoso James Allsopp.
The new trio builds on Allsopp's long association with drummer Tim Giles, his co-leader of the award winning quintet Fraud (BBC Jazz Award for Innovation 2008) and is completed by Mercury nomiated keyboard sensation Kit Downes, winner of the BBC Jazz Award for Rising Star 2008.
Allsopp's music is inspired by the combination of the anarchic playfulness and formal logic of Ligeti's music, the joyous saxophone thunder of Coltrane and Ayler and the twisted lyricism of Captain Beefheart.
Raspberry Tongue licks and blows the genre distinctions between contemporary classical music, electronics and the full spectrum of Jazz improvisation from the blues all the way to the extremities of the avant garde. The compositions on Raspberry Tongue create new structural spaces for improvisation by establishing sound worlds that explore the intangible area in between rhythm, tonality and total improvisational freedom. The music is sometimes labyrinthine, sometimes eerily sparse, incorporating seismic riffs, limping marches and intricately woven contrapuntal textures into a multi-coloured world of improvised sound.
Allsopp also contributed the drawings to the CD's design, as enigmatic as his composition titles which might be the answers to a cryptic crossword for which we must identify the clues.
