  • Description

There can't be many bands who can lay claim to have cornered the market in cinematic roots funk, but Angel Brothers can.

Their first new album in four years (previous releases include 'Forbidden Fruit' and 'From Punjab to Pit Top' – both Wrecking Ball) 'Angel Brothers' (Navigator) marks a return to the roots of this highly original band, with the founding members Keith and Dave Angel working closely together on nine sparkling new compositions and recordings.

The album reflects their boyhood passion for cinema and the self-penned tracks echo with the soundscapes of fellow Yorkshireman John Barry, Spaghetti western maestro Ennio Morricone and Carnivale composer Jeff Beal. Throughout, the irresistible Angel Brother's Anglo/Asian groove is, of course, still very much present and this, combined with serious musicianship and a myriad of cultural influences are what set the Angel Brothers apart.

Tongues of Fire ( track 1) has an epic groove and guitar theme, with driving strings that pay homage to Led Zeppelin's classic proto–world music anthem 'Kashmir'. Ghosts ( track 2) composition is in three movements and was created as a way of conveying the feelings of strangeness and a desire for deeper understanding after the loss of a parent. This haunting and heartfelt piece features vocals by Sandhya Sanjana and Mick Humphrey. Meanwhile, Same Sky Different Planet (Track 5) was written during a two year break from the band during which time the brother's travelled extensively throughout India and Africa. This piece was written on a small, portable guitar and was inspired by the 'Dark Star' concept of a parallel universe/ planet very similar to our own – but at the same time entirely different ; Doncaster and Timbuktu being two good examples of this…

Within the past 18 months, Keith Angel also managed to produce, record and play on an array of successful roots music albums including Jon Boden's acclaimed 'Songs From the Floodplain' Ella Edmunson's debut cd and Martin Simpson's forthcoming release, 'True Stories'.

The new album features contributions from Jim Lockey - bass , Andy Seward (Kate Rusby)– double bass/ electric bass ;Indian vocalist Sandhya Sanjana and long–time associate Mick Humphrey. Dave Formula (ex of cult post punk band, Magazine) also makes a cameo appearance on keyboards, whilst Jayne Cooper and Richard Masters add atmospheric vocals. On this album, strings feature prominently with violins, viola and cello all played by Becki Driscoll and Nick Wyke.
