Description
Part of a new breed of African artists, 24 year old Spoek Mathambo (Rapper/DJ and Graphic Designer/Illustrator) is hitting the world hard with his take on Afro-futurism. Spoek sees himself as a part of a new wave of energy in Africa, which is intent on nurturing a sense of progressiveness while maintaining a pride in culture. As front-man for electro rap outfits SWEAT.X and PLAYDOE, Spoek Mathambo has become a increasingly prominent figure in the international music scene over the last couple of years. Most recently, Spoek Mathambo has finished recording his solo album, Mshini Wam for BBE, and has built a live band (which includes two dancers) in order to tour the project. The release of this project is particularly exciting as a sign to the world of what Africa has in store in terms of progressive electronic music. As a DJ, Spoek's HIVIP project of promoting South African music has gathered widespread attention as far afield as the New York Times and Fader Magazine, and has seen him DJ in Norway, France, Sweden and Germany. As well as becoming an exciting fixture on South Africa's live scene, SWEAT.X'sGo Black Go Low Go Fast (2007), Throwing Shade (2008) and I'm That Alley (2009) tours have seen them blaze festival and club stages and dancefloors across Austria, Belgium, Holland, Ukraine, France, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, and the UK. PLAYDOE has toured extensively in the UK, Germany, Reunion Island and France and has numerous engagements in Canada, Europe and the US lined up for the next year. From the record deals with UK based Try Harder, to Lyon, France based Jarring FX and Amsterdam based Rwina, to picking up representation by powerhouse EU/UK booking agents PRIMARY.
