Description
Handel's Dixit Dominus HWV 232 (1707) is certainly one of the most impressive compositions of his stay in Italy of several years. With this extremely effective piece, the only 22-year-old clearly wanted to demonstrate all his compositional skills.
On their recording, Il Gardellino and Bart Van Reyn place it alongside the breathtaking cantata Il Pianto di Maria, long attributed to Handel until recent research revealed that it was penned by the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Ferrandini (1710-1791).
The soloists on this new recording are: Deborah Cachet; Rachel Redmond; Sophie Rennert and Bart van Reyn accompanied by Il Gardellino Orchestra and the Vlaams Radiokoor.
"There is no lack of recordings of [Dixit Dominus], as it is one of Handel's most popular sacred compositions. This recording by the Flemish Radio Choir and Il Gardellino Baroque Orchestra has to be reckoned among the best available." – MusicWeb International
"Through her luminous performance of the cantata, young mezzo-soprano Sophie Rennert takes her place among foremost Baroque music interpreters […]. Van Reyn seizes on the opportunities Handel provides, his abrupt entries and pulsing tempos creating a quivering tension in fast movements [Dixit]." – BBC Music Magazine ****
