Description
Skip&Die is the sensational new genre-blending band formed by South African vocalist/visual artist Catarina Aimée Dahms (aka Cata.Pirata) and Dutch musician/producer Jori Collignon, who have absorbed elements of Tropical and Global Bass music, hip hop, electronica and a broad spectrum of sounds from all over the planet.
'Riots in the Jungle' was written by Cata.Pirata and Jori while they travelled through South Africa's Soweto, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Guguletu, collaborating along the way with some of SA's most inspiring music-makers on the rise.
They describe this adventure as "a magical experience" meeting and working with the likes of vocalist Gazelle, intertwining politics and dance music, hip hop crew Driemanskap, rappers Emza and Magebz, experimental rock musician (and BLK JKS collaborator) João Orecchia, the Season Marimba Stars and more. Back in Europe, Catarina and Jori developed their sound working with various musicians in the studio, including brass and woodwind players from the Amsterdam Klezmer Band.
Containing songs in Spanish, Portuguese, English, Afrikaans, Xhosa and Zulu, the album portrays their experience of blazing sun, dusty roads, township shacks, cockroaches, skulls, bones and lovebirds. It consists of a wonderfully diverse and shimmering collection of songs, in which the outstanding production work, the nasty beats, the mysterious field recordings, the guests' performances and the inventive arrangements are all crowned by Cata.Pirata's incisive lyrics and mesmerising vocals.
