Description
The world premiere recording of Jacques Vanherenthals Four Baroque Suites for solo double bass, performed by Shagan Grolier.
The double bass has its own sound universe and stylistic virtuoso pieces for this instrument are rare, if not non-existent. It was from this observation and this shortcoming that the composer and double bassist Jacques Vanherenthals (b. 1948) came up with the idea of composing a series of dance suites in the style of the Baroque composers.
The recording of these works is not only a world premiere but also unique. As a direct homage to Bach's six suites for solo cello, these original virtuoso pieces are written for solo double bass in the Baroque style, a challenge approached with the humility and skill of the craftsman, the knowledge of the master and the sensitivity of the artist.
It is an important contribution to the repertoire of this instrument.
