Description
Stroll and sprint. Lingering and setting out. Melancholic reminiscence, but always looking forward - dual opposites have been a common thread running through the work of the Hamburg indie/dream-pop band Scotch & Water ever since they were founded, and it is precisely in this field of tension that their debut album "Sirens" resonates. The four-piece ensemble skilfully plays with the pace and perspectives of its listeners and promises to appeal equally to vinyl lovers of the first hour, witnesses of the New Wave revival of the early 2000s and children of the new millennium. Scotch & Water confidently weaves influences from Fleetwood Mac to Arcade Fire to Bon Iver or The War on Drugs into multifaceted and complex soundscapes. It's a confidence the four confidently draw from the speed of the attention-grabbing successes of their mere three years in existence. The four function wonderfully at this pace, but then slow down their running pace for the time being to respond to this impressive start with a captivating debut album. Well thought-out, multifaceted and complex Scotch & Water present themselves on "Sirens" because not only the album title but also the sound are attention-grabbing and noisy. In contrast, the album was created in the silence of the North Frisian sea. Scotch & Water have deliberately retreated there to create their debut album in two intensive sessions. There, in a farmhouse converted into a studio with co-producer S?nke Torpus, almost finished songs as well as acoustic fragments matured in the familiar band community in an almost five-week negotiation process to eleven finished pieces. Together with the officially unofficial fifth band member and producer Dennis Bajer, this process of friction and consensus resulted in a debut album that one is only too happy to follow through the unfolding of its eleven songs.
