Description
Nistico was one of the true greats of the tenor saxophone. Having first come to prominence with Woody Herman's Herd, he later went on to play with the Count Basie Band, Jazz Brothers with Chuck Mangione, and the Three Generations of Tenor Saxophone band featuring, among others, Johnny Griffin. His popularity here is the UK though was born out of his playing with the Stan Tracy Quartet both in the recording studio and on the concert stage.
Featured here at the helm of an excellent all Italian quartet, the programme includes Billy Strayhorn's Lush Life , Joe Henderson's Inner Urge,Charlie Parker's The Hymn, and Nistico's cowritten composition with Rachel Gould, Empty Room. This is jazz at its best and warmest.
"The starting point remains, in any case, Rollins. But the full and generous sonority, the elegant and clear phrasing now seem to tend towards classicism, with particularly happy results." - Salvatore G. Biamonte, Musica Jazz
