  • Description

Continuing its work with the rising stars of the early music world, CORO is delighted to be releasing its second recording with one of The Sixteen Orchestra's principal members - organist Robert Quinney. This new album, which was recorded at Trinity College, Cambridge, on the beautiful Metzler Organ, features a number of virtuosic works from Bach's early years including one of the most famous pieces of organ music in the repertory - the Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565). The disc also includes the Toccata and Fugue in F (BWV 540) and the Passacaglia (BWV 582) - one of Bach's most well-known and important organ works. Robert Schumann described the variations of the Passacaglia as "intertwined so ingeniously that one can never cease to be amazed." Robert Quinney is Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral. As Sub-Organist of Westminster Abbey he played at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in April 2011. In addition to his daily work, he maintains a busy freelance schedule as a soloist and ensemble player, and is also Director of Oundle for Organists. His double compact disc The Grand Organ of Westminster Cathedral, recorded in 2004, was Instrumental Disc of the Month in BBC Music, earned a 5-star review in the French journal Diapason, and was an Editor's Choice in Gramophone. His first disc for CORO - J.S. Bach Trio Sonatas for Organ (COR16095) - also received excellent reviews when it was released in October 2011.
