Ray Charles combined elements of gospel, R&B, blues, and jazz into an impassioned, exuberant style that would come to be known as soul music. While recording for Atlantic Records and ABC-Paramount, the innovative singer, pianist, composer, and bandleader broke down the barriers between sacred and secular music. In his own words, he fostered "a crossover between gospel music and the rhythm patterns of the blues." This CD contains 27 of some of his most emblematic songs released on Atlantic and ABC during the period 1954 - 1962.

This LP contains some of the most outstanding hits he ever made, among them such perennial classics as 'What'd I Say', 'Georgia on My Mind', 'Hit the Road, Jack', 'I Can't Stop Loving You,' 'Drown in My Own Tears', and 'Hallelujah I Love Her So'.
Possing one of the most recognizable voices in American music, he defied categorisation and was equally at home with blues, soul, jazz, swing, country and more - in fact, any kind of music that took his fancy - all of which he distilled into his own unique and recognisable sound.
