Description
On his new album, Antwerp cathedral organist Peter Van de Velde gathers almost exclusively world premiere recordings, the centrepiece of which is the only organ symphony by the Belgian Camille Jacquemin. Jacquemin had been a pupil of Louis Vierne and Charles Tournemire in Paris. His three-movement symphony is dedicated to Louis Vierne and clearly inspired by his tonal language, which makes the work a real discovery!
The same can be said of the only organ work by Joseph Jongen's younger brother, Léon Jongen, who was known primarily as a pianist. His composition "In Memoriam Regis" is a requiem on the death of the popular Belgian King Albert the First and is followed by the Marche religieuse of his presumably better-known older brother Joseph.
The Brussels Servite Brother Jean-Marie Plum left a large number of organ works. His three-movement cycle complements the programme of rarities just as appropriately as the two compositions by the Karl Straube pupil Raymond Moulaert and the Diptyque composed by Pierre Froidebise.
Critical Acclaim
"Perhaps the most interesting work is the tone poem In Memoriam Regis […]. Brooding, original and more than a little impressionistic, it surely deserves to be better known. […] Van de Velde plays with muscle and conviction." – Choir & Organ (4 STARS)
"Van de Velde has unearthed a treasure that demands much more intensive exploration, and he does so on a Belgian instrument that could not be better suited to it. The editorial preparation by Aeolus is, as always, excellent. Outstanding!" – Schallplattenkritik Quarterly Critic's Choice
