Description
Although Buena Vista Social Club from the famous film by Wim Wenders may be more famous, Cuban music holds many other treasures in store. The Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba, performing under its principal conductor Enrique Pérez Mesa, now for the first time on MDG surveys the incredible variety of the Cuban music tradition.
Rhythm is omnipresent. It is not without reason that Alejandro García Caturla's Tres Danzas Cubanas open the program. The three dances - Danza del Tambor, Motivos de Danza, Danza Iucum' - introduce us to the complex rhythms of Cuban music with incomparable charm. Here the musicians of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba are very much in their element, and Caturla's refined art of instrumentation schooled with Nadia Boulanger comes with a special guarantee: even in a full symphonic instrumentation audiences will sway to the beat of these vibrant dances.
