Description
Avie introduces pianist Olivia Sham, whose debut recording, 'Liszt: The Art of Remembering', explores links between Franz Liszt's evolving compositional technique and the development of the nineteenth-century piano.
Australian-born pianist Olivia Sham, now a resident of London where she recently completed a doctorate degree at the Royal Academy of Music. Her debut recording, 'Liszt: The Art of Remembering', explores links between Franz Liszt's evolving compositional technique and the development of the nineteenth-century piano. She performs early works including Etudes d'exécution transcendante and the arrangement of Marche au supplice from Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique on two different Parisian Érard pianos from the 1840s, and later works such as Valse oubliée on a modern Steinway.
Personnel: Olivia Sham (piano)
Critical acclaim for Olivia Sham:
"A player of very high calibre. She combines a virtuoso technique with a great deal of musicianship and sensitivity." - Liszt Society, concert review
"Olivia Sham moved seamlessly, piece to piece, between the 1920 Steinway A and the beautiful Erard of 1849...She had committed the entire oeuvre to memory, and played with bravura and delicacy, winning over easily the capacity audience, not all Liszt enthusiasts, convincing us that the right historical instruments can help us to get closer to a Liszt 'sound' quite different to what is often heard in today's concerts." - Musical Pointers
