Two years before becoming the world's favourite high-school sweetheart, Olivia Newton-John was celebrating the release of her seventh and eighth studio albums (Come On Over and Don't Stop Believin', both 1976) as a British-Australian entertainer with a line in claiming US country-pop standards as her own.Her global appeal was in evidence in December 1976, when she performed live at the Budokan, in Tokyo, Japan, delivering vibrant performances of John Denver's 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' and 'Jolene' alongside a plaintive rendition of her Billboard chart-topper 'I Honestly Love You'.
Her star-making turn as Sandra Dee, in Grease, would catapult her to even greater heights, but New Year's Eve Concert, 1976 captures a lesser-known Olivia Newton-John on the verge of worldwide fame – and more than ready to embrace it.
