Description
On her third album Mor Karbasi, a leading singer in the Sephardic tradition, performs adaptations of traditional Ladino songs and three original compositions with fado, flamenco and jazz inflected arrangements.
Mor sings in Ladino, a beautiful language, with its roots in the ancient lost culture of the Jewish communities of the golden age of Al-Andalus in 10th century southern Spain, that has almost died out as well as in Hebrew and Spanish. 'La Tsadika' explores largely traditional Moroccan Sephardic repertoire and pays tribute to her Moroccan-born mother's influence, with Mor providing musical settings for her mother's lyrics on two songs. Mor discovered a treasure trove of untouched field recordings of traditional Sephardic songs from Morocco and these provide the focus of the album.
Karbasi has surrounded herself with musicians of the highest calibre and of divergent backgrounds, representative of her own mixed influences: intricate string arrangements are provided by Tom Cohen, director of the Andalusian Orchestra of Israel. Itamar Doari and Gilad Amsalem bring incredible Middle Eastern percussion, Mark Eliyahu emphasises the Arabic presence with emotive kamanche, Avishai Cohen adds jazz trumpet colours, and the influence of Seville comes from the brilliant flamenco guitar of Salvador Gutiérrez.
Added to this, and true to her previous albums, Joe Taylor's tasteful and innovative guitar interwoven throughout the songs adds its unique colour. Also featured are her regular live players Davide Mantovani (bass) and Andres Ticino (percussion).
'One of the great young divas of the global music scene' - The Guardian
'A wonderful voice-a truly expressive, electrifying instrument with a huge but superbly controlled rage of tones, decorations and expression.' - fRoots
