Description
'Children of Time' is an original work for big band by jazz composer and pianist Michael Garrick, which features the voice of one of the UK's greatest vocalists, Norma Winstone. She is backed by Garrick's Jazz Britannia Orchestra, the band that appeared at the celebration of British jazz that Gilles Peterson curated at the Barbican in 2004. This recording reunites him with Norma Winstone for the first time since 1973.
Garrick describes 'Children of Time' as a "kind of space odyssey" and he has set to music text from the book of Genesis, the Eucharist and Garrick's own Underground Streams and Heavenly Bodies. Musical influences include Ellington and Basie and featured musicians include drummer Alan Jackson, trumpeter Steve Waterman and saxophonists Matt Wates and Jamie Anderson.
