Description
Jerwood Series 4 includes music by William Attwood, Joanna Bailie and Richard Causton. Phoenix, commissioned for the London Sinfonietta by Henry Greenfield, won Richard Causton the coveted chamber-scale composition prize at the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards 2007. It is paired with Sleep for solo flute, one of the last recordings made by the London Sinfonietta's principal flautist Sebastian Bell before his death in September 2007. William Attwood and Joanna Bailie have established reputations in the UK and on the continent as both composers and as joint directors of innovative performing ensembles; Attwood is involved with Ensemble Grenzpunkt, whilst Bailie runs Ensemble Plus-Minus.
This release is part of the London Sinfonietta's 6-volume Jerwood Series, focussing on recent works by young composers working in the UK. The series also celebrates the support the ensemble has given these composers: most of the works were commissioned by or written for the ensemble, and were recorded live at world or London premiere performances.
