Description
Born in 1886, Edouard 'Kid' Ory was one of the great New Orleans jazz pioneers, an early trombonist who virtually defined the 'tailgate' style. In 1921 his was the first black New Orleans jazz band to record. From that session "Ory's Creole Trombone" opens this CD. He remained hot during the Roaring '20s then fell out of fashion until making a mighty comeback in 1944, when he was asked to form a band for actor Orson Welles' radio show. The 12 tracks from those broadcasts make up the meat of this CD, interspersed with eight introductions by Welles himself. These have never before been released on disc. The musical sandwich is completed by six tracks from Ory's performance at the 1971 New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival, 52 years after he'd last played at the same theatre. A rounded portrait of a legendary musician.
