Description
A jazz critic once complained that Jr Mance 'turned everything into a blues' - wrong! Jr Mance turned everything into The Blues! His style was deeply funky, soulful, genre busting, percussive and was as much deep blues as any wailing harmonica player.
Jr Mance was of course a product of his time, his culture and his musical experience. He had deep experience in the jazz world and I have included here the marvelous original 1980 sleevenote, written by Charles Fox, which details his life and career. Just look at those names he played with and collaborated with over the years – legends all
This album was recorded in 1980 at New York's famed Downtown Sound. It was recorded direct to stereo on ¼" tape. The balance was brilliantly caught by the engineer and of course, no overdubs, just real music played by real musicians in 'the moment'. The remastering has been done from the original session tapes, but utilises the most modern technology. There's a separate note written by Martin Atkinson who did the remastering. This music has never sounded better or more powerful, and I think this rework of the original tapes brings out even more of the power of the piano, the sheer percussiveness of the playing. This set is no mere 'reissue', but a back to the basics reimagining of this marvelous recording that is now over 40 years old!
And if you hear this album playing as background music in a restaurant - that's either a very, very hip restaurant owner - or it got there in error because polite piano jazz this is not!
