Jon Lloyd Quartet released Earth Songs on Ubuntu Music in 2024 to critical acclaim - over 2 million streams later they are now releasing Anima, in association with ECN Music, to continue their unique blend of European contemporary jazz. Saxophonist and composer Jon Lloyd, pianist John Law, bassist Nick Pini and drummer Alex Goodyear have produced a wonderful new recording steeped in non-Western music, ECM melodic fusion and displaying a hushed neo-classical grace.
Highlights inlude "Towards Tomorrow" - a poignant, emotional melody played over a gentle piano and drum rhythm. Followed by lyrical soloing from tenor and piano, the piece has a romantic, optimistic mood! "Closer", a haunting soprano sax melody hangs over bowed bass and bubbling piano. The piece builds over cascading, multi-layered piano lines to finish as calm as it began. "Build a Fire" - this hypnotic piece has a beautiful, unfolding tenor saxophone melody which floats over a repeating drum figure, bass arpeggio and gospel-influenced piano voicings. It is a perfect introduction to Anima, an album of life-affirming European jazz!
