Finnish-Dutch cellist Jonathan Roozemanpresents a programme featuring contemporaryworks for cello by Finnish composers. For someof the pieces, he is accompanied by pianist andcomposer Johannes Piirto. Centered around asonata by music veteran Kalevi Aho, theprogram's six works reflect the diversity ofcontemporary Finnish music, all having beencomposed within the last fifteen years.Sauli Zinovjev's "Sustained" appears as aghostly, discordant, fragmented reflection ofmusic from the Romantic period. CeciliaDamstrom's "Aveo" was composed for peoplewho suffer from long COVID and who have hadto bid farewell to their normal lives."Recitativo" by Sebastian Fagerlund, acommission from a cello competition,challenges not only the cellists' mastery of theirinstrument but also their interpretativeabilities. "Sanasi, kiveen uponneet" by OutiTarkiainen, a composer who brings to hermusic the perspective of someone born in thenorth, in Finnish Lapland, features powerfulsoundscapes inspired by natural phenomena aswell as human themes touching on the deepestemotions of mankind. The programmeconcludes with "We Lie Down Only to Get UpAgain" by Lauri Porra, a composer whoexemplifies the multifaceted nature ofcontemporary Finnish music. This work evokesthe atmosphere of a summer morning withwarmth, perhaps even with a touch of longing.
