Description
John Oates is no stranger to success. Since the formation of his partnership in the early 70's with Daryl Hall, Hall & Oates went on to sell over 80 million units making them the most successful duo in rock history. The Bluesville Sessions sees John return to his primary influences from before this time, however, and includes his gritty interpretations of classic songs, a couple of new entries in his own canon and one glance backwards at a Hall & Oates classic.
The recording session itself was supervised and inspired by Bill Wax, programme director and host of B.B. King's Bluesville channel at Sirius/XM Radio Station Studios in Washington D.C. The aim was a simple one - to capture John and his group live in real time and in doing so create a snapshot of the set that thousands of fans had heard. The album is also 100% live with no studio overdubs.
Included on the album are many songs that mattered to John before he met Daryl Hall and which turned him on to music. Drawing inspiration from such diverse influences as Chuck Berry, Mississippi John Hurt and Doc Watson he casts the stylistic net further still by performing Elvis Presley's "All Shook Up", Curtis Mayfield's "It's Alright", the folk/blues standard "Sittin' On Top Of The World" and his gravelly interpretation of the Hall & Oates hit, "Maneater".
Personnel: John Oates (guitar, vocals), Mark Newman (guitar, slide guitar, vocals), Kevin McKendree (piano, organ), Michael Jude (bass, vocals), John Michel (drums, vocals)
